Mysterious God

“Can you fathom the mysteries of God?. . .Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.” Job 11:7a9

People wonder if we sailed through the Bermuda Triangle, the notorious area of the North Atlantic where many boats are said to have disappeared. We did. And we’re still alive!

But in that vicinity one night (when it seems all manner of odd things happen), we did encounter something strange. We had the sails up full, and the wind was blowing a steady 10 knots when suddenly our boat came to a complete stop. The sails were billowing, but we weren’t moving. Were we caught on seaweed, perhaps? With flashlights we looked into the water but saw nothing. My husband offered to dive under the boat to investigate, but we thought better of it.

Inexplicably, after about an hour, we began to move again.

Who can fathom the mysteries of God? Who can explain His great mercy? Often we’re going along full when something brings us to a halt. Perhaps we are even doing a good work, ministering to others. We can’t explain why the Lord would cause us to change course or stop altogether. But even then we can trust in His perfect sovereignty.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
