Today’s Verses: Isaiah 30; Philippians 4

Today’s Thoughts: Giving to God First

Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:17-19

We quote Philippians 4:19 frequently to ease our concerns about insufficient finances as we say, “I know that God will supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” However, did you know that the context of this verse is about giving, not receiving? According to the context of this Scripture, Paul was saying that we will receive from God if we are willing to give to God first. Paul was thanking the Philippi believers for giving to him. Paul also said that he had learned to be content in all circumstances and he was thankful that they gave, so that fruit may abound on their behalf.

Why is it so difficult to give first? How can we live with an eternal perspective when it comes to money? Because we need to pay real life monthly bills, make actual house payments and physically handle money, it is difficult to believe that our money will go the extra distance by giving tithes and offerings.  We can give away older things to replace them with newer things, although that kind of giving tends to be to our personal advantage.  We can give to our families and even to our own social life, but to tithe regularly seems impossible. The word “tithe” means a tenth or 10% and God specifies that the amount is subtracted from our first fruits (our gross salary). God also talks about “offerings.” An offering is in addition to the tithe. This seems like it would require too much faith to even begin giving.

But God asks us to give so He can bless us, to give cheerfully, not with clenched fists.  If we open our hands freely to the work of God, we are in a position that we can freely receive from His open hand toward us. Corrie ten Boom said, “I have learned to hold on to things loosely because it hurts when God pries them away.” The interesting thing about clenched fists towards God is that we can never protect what we have from God any way. Remember: God will supply all of our needs when we supply to His first.

Oh Lord, help me to give to You without my left hand knowing what my right hand is doing. Let me be a blessing to You first and I will trust You to take care of me.

Daily Courage – October 8

from Day by Day with the Persecuted Church

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1)

Li-An

During the time I was persecuted because of the Gospel, I was once condemned to die. But the Lord protected me. Instead of taking my life they threw me into prison.

Some time afterward, something strange happened. The judge who had sentenced me got into trouble himself. Because of his political activities, he was sentenced to a long prison term. He was not only put into the same prison, but he was put into the same cell with me.

After he found out my name he started to cry, “O God, I surrender. Oh, Jesus I really surrender.”

He went on for four or five minutes and then turned to me. “So it is you. Do you remember me? Your life was in my hands. I had already sentenced you to die and I did try to execute the sentence many times, but every time I tried to get you executed something happened which kept delaying the execution. But who would have thought I would be here, in prison, with you? I see that your God has preserved your life. You are in His hands. But I am in the hands of the Marxists. They will not let me live. Forgive me please. I need your Jesus.”

I looked at him. He had been my judge. Now I was his judge. And the Lord told me what kind of sentence I should pass on him.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father” (Matthew 10:29).

God forgives, and so should we.

“Make the Decision to Win”
The Spirit of God once said to me, “Son, if you are not willing to make a decision to win, then you are not going to win.”

Success begins with a decision.

The decision to succeed will produce an unwavering commitment to do what it takes to discover the spiritual laws relevant to your challenge (get wisdom), and to diligently apply these laws throughout your journey to complete victory.

Nothing just happens or changes on its own. Getting wisdom from the Word of God is the first step toward victory. Declaring the Word is what brings about change.

God wants you to be successful even more than you want to be successful, but if you don’t believe and act according to His Word, there is nothing He can do about it. However, when you do your part, God will always do His part.

Truth Confession

Today I make the decision to win. I make an unwavering commitment to do what it takes to get the wisdom of God for my situation, and then to apply it and declare it until victory is achieved.

Building on the Atonement

…present…your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  Romans 6:13

I cannot save and sanctify myself; I cannot make atonement for sin; I cannot redeem the world; I cannot right what is wrong, purify what is impure, or make holy what is unholy. That is all the sovereign work of God. Do I have faith in what Jesus Christ has done? He has made the perfect atonement for sin. Am I in the habit of constantly realizing it? The greatest need we have is not to do things, but to believe things. The redemption of Christ is not an experience, it is the great act of God which He has performed through Christ, and I have to build my faith on it. If I construct my faith on my own experience, I produce the most unscriptural kind of life— an isolated life, with my eyes focused solely on my own holiness. Beware of that human holiness that is not based on the atonement of the Lord. It has no value for anything except a life of isolation— it is useless to God and a nuisance to man. Measure every kind of experience you have by our Lord Himself. We cannot do anything pleasing to God unless we deliberately build on the foundation of the atonement by the Cross of Christ.

The atonement of Jesus must be exhibited in practical, unassuming ways in my life. Every time I obey, the absolute deity of God is on my side, so that the grace of God and my natural obedience are in perfect agreement. Obedience means that I have completely placed my trust in the atonement, and my obedience is immediately met by the delight of the supernatural grace of God.

Beware of the human holiness that denies the reality of the natural life— it is a fraud. Continually bring yourself to the trial or test of the atonement and ask, “Where is the discernment of the atonement in this, and in that?” From My Utmost for His Highest Updated Edition

WISDOM FROM OSWALD CHAMBERS

To read the Bible according to God’s providential order in your circumstances is the only way to read it, viz., in the blood and passion of personal life.
