This Is Not Your Parents’ Marriage – I Do Every Day – February 20, 2020

This Is Not Your Parents’ Marriage
By Sherri Oehme

It began when my hubby and I returned from our honeymoon. As I unpacked our suitcases, I filled the laundry room floor with sorted piles of dirty clothes.

I was excited to begin my wifely duties, even laundry. Through my actions, I was going to show him how much I loved him.

When I heard the buzz signaling the first completed load, I eagerly rushed in to remove the warm tangle of clothes.

But when he came in to help, words I had never heard spoken, nevertheless still understood, slipped from my sweet, smiling lips: “This is my job.”

“We don’t have my jobs and your jobs—we’re married and we work together.”

Well, okay then … I thought, wondering how long this was going to last.

I entered marriage comfortable with the idea of being his helper. But honestly, the other way around was a bit foreign to me.

I grew up when roles were more gender defined. He grew up as an only child raised by a mother who didn’t have that luxury.

And we recognized early that these dissimilar upbringings were going to shape our marriage into one completely different from our parents’. Into a marriage that works for us.

True to his word, 30 years later, he still helps me fold laundry, cook, rinse dishes, and clean the house. And I help him mow the lawn, care for the garden, and clean the garage.

Our marriage doesn’t look anything like those we were (and weren’t) raised in. We learned that’s OK. Different isn’t wrong—it’s just different.

Marriage often looks different after a few decades. Read “40 Lessons From 40 Years of Marriage.”

The good stuff: Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

Action point: Talk about the roles of your mother and father when you were growing up. Were they gender defined, or did your parents share the responsibilities of the home? How is your marriage similar? Different? Are your current roles working for you both? If not, discuss what’s not working and how you can become better helpers to one another.

Living Fully Present – Homeword – February 20

Living Fully Present

This devotional was written by Mike DeVries

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God —Exodus 20:8-10

When my kids were young, they had a habit. When they wanted to get my attention, they would keep asking the same question until they believed they had my attention.

My wife once asked me, “Do you know why the kids do that? Because sometimes they have to ask repeatedly in order to bring you back from wherever you are – to be fully here and not somewhere else.”

Ever been there? Ever been physically in one place, but your mind is somewhere else? It’s as if your mind is working overtime on something elsewhere, somewhere supposedly “important.”

I think God knows that we are wired this way. In fact, I believe that this is exactly the reason God commanded His people to remember and celebrate the Sabbath, keeping it as a central part of the sacred rhythm of life.

In Jewish thinking, the Sabbath was a gift, not a burden. It was a gift of God; a reminder that our lives are not defined by what we do, or what we produce, but rather who we are and who we are becoming. The Sabbath was a 24-hour period set aside where nothing is urgent, nothing is taking you “somewhere else.” It was a 24-hour period where you lived fully present, fully invested in the here and now, in this moment. It was a day where you did not live in the past, or in the future, but called to live within this breath, and then the next.

You see, this is the reason God commanded His people not to work on the Sabbath. He knows how we are wired. God knows that we often define ourselves by what we accomplish. Yet the Sabbath was a gift that reminded His people that they are not valued for what they produce, they are not worthy because of a title. On the Sabbath, all were equal. Accomplishment was prohibited.

The only thing that mattered was being reminded that your worth comes from God, that you are His. Central to the day was unplugging from the rhythm of the other six days, and finding a day where one could be fully connected with the Creator.

This was the nature of the Sabbath. Gift, not burden.

Which leads us to all sorts of questions, does it not? Where do you find your worth? Is the rhythm of your life sustainable? Is it life-giving or life-draining?

You see… Sabbath is not a luxury. It is not a burden, something that gets in the way of “life.” Sabbath is a sacred, life-giving rhythm. It is essential to creation, to re-creation. It is a sacred space to be entered into…a space where we slow down, reflect, and remember. It is a place where we can breathe. Be. Still. Celebrate. Connect. Unplug. Refresh. Restore. Live fully present.

GOING DEEPER:

What kind of changes do you need to make to truly live Sabbath rhythm?

The Fatal Sin of Aaron’s Sons
Leviticus 9:1;  Psalms 24:3-6;  Proverbs 10:4
Aaron therefore went to the altar and killed the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. Then the sons of Aaron brought the blood to him. And he dipped his finger in the blood, put it on the horns of the altar, and poured the blood at the base of the altar. But the fat, the kidneys, and the fatty lobe from the liver of the sin offering he burned on the altar, as the LORD had commanded Moses. The flesh and the hide he burned with fire outside the camp.
And he killed the burnt offering; and Aaron’s sons presented to him the blood, which he sprinkled all around on the altar. Then they presented the burnt offering to him, with its pieces and head, and he burned them on the altar. And he washed the entrails and the legs, and burned them with the burnt offering on the altar.
Then he brought the people’s offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and killed it and offered it for sin, like the first one. And he brought the burnt offering and offered it according to the prescribed manner. Then he brought the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar, besides the burnt sacrifice of the morning.
He also killed the bull and the ram as sacrifices of peace offerings, which were for the people. And Aaron’s sons presented to him the blood, which he sprinkled all around on the altar, and the fat from the bull and the ram-the fatty tail, what covers the entrails and the kidneys, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver; and they put the fat on the breasts. Then he burned the fat on the altar; but the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved as a wave offering before the LORD, as Moses had commanded.
Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, blessed them, and came down from offering the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings. And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting, and came out and blessed the people. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people, and fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.
Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke, saying:
‘By those who come near Me
I must be regarded as holy;
And before all the people
I must be glorified.’
So Aaron held his peace.
Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.” So they went near and carried them by their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said.
And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons, “Do not uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the people. But let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD has kindled. You shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.” And they did according to the word of Moses.
Then the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying: “Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.”
And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons who were left: “Take the grain offering that remains of the offerings made by fire to the LORD, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy. You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons’ due, of the sacrifices made by fire to the LORD; for so I have been commanded. The breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering you shall eat in a clean place, you, your sons, and your daughters with you; for they are your due and your sons’ due, which are given from the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel. The thigh of the heave offering and the breast of the wave offering they shall bring with the offerings of fat made by fire, to offer as a wave offering before the LORD. And it shall be yours and your sons’ with you, by a statute forever, as the LORD has commanded.”
Then Moses made careful inquiry about the goat of the sin offering, and there it was-burned up. And he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left, saying, “Why have you not eaten the sin offering in a holy place, since it is most holy, and God has given it to you to bear the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? See! Its blood was not brought inside the holy place; indeed you should have eaten it in a holy place, as I commanded.”
And Aaron said to Moses, “Look, this day they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD, and such things have befallen me! If I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD?” So when Moses heard that, he was content.
WORSHIP
Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD?
Or who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive blessing from the LORD,
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him,
Who seek Your face. Selah
WISDOM
He who has a slack hand becomes poor,
But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
