Children of the Most High – Holy Land Moments with The Fellowship – February 11

Children of the Most High

The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: ‘A priest must not make himself ceremonially unclean for any of his people who die . . . ’” —Leviticus 21:1

As we remember the anniversary of Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein’s passing this month, we offer you a selection of his devotional thoughts on leaving a legacy of faith. Learn how you can honor Rabbi Eckstein’s lifework and legacy through our Wings of Eagles ministry.

When I was living in the United States, I was used to people referring to each other with terms of affection like “sweetheart” or “honey.” It was normal to see a parent calling his son “buddy” or “sport.” When I got to Israel I had to readjust my language. Here, it is quite normal for a mother to call her son tsaddik, which means “saint” or “righteous one.” Even a cab driver might call you tsaddik! Another common term of endearment is neshama, which means “soul.” Parents, teachers, and workers alike commonly refer to others as neshama.

It took some getting used to, but now I truly appreciate these terms that have become standard Israeli parlance. How beautiful to remind each other who we really are! My guess is that a child who grows up being called tsaddik may be just a bit more likely to become one.

This reminds me of a conversation that I had with a secular Israeli with almost no connection to the Jewish tradition. He mentioned to me the name of his great-grandfather because he had once heard that this man was a well-known rabbi. It was a name that I knew quite well.

When I responded enthusiastically to his great-grandfather’s name and gushed about his reputation, suddenly this detached Israeli stood a little straighter. I could see pride shining through his eyes. It was clear that he saw himself differently – all from knowing who his great-grandfather was. He was part of an important legacy, and I like to think that perhaps that chance encounter had a profound impact on his life.

Our Scripture today begins, “The LORD said to Moses, ‘Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them . . .’” The verse could have more simply stated, “Say to Aron’s sons . . .” The Jewish sages teach that there were two things that Moses was to say to the priests, which is why there is the double language of first “speak” and then “say.” First, Moses was to say to the priests, “You are the sons of Aaron.” Only then would the rest follow.

It is so important for a person to know who they are so that they can fulfill their life’s mission. In the case of the priests, they had to be reminded that they were Aaron’s sons, heirs to a prominent legacy. In our case, we need to remember that we are “all sons of the Most High” (Psalm 82:6). As we contemplate that we are children of God, we should stand a little taller and feel a bit more confident. Most importantly, once we know who we are and whose we are, we must behave accordingly.

You can honor the lifework and legacy or Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein by participating in the Rabbi Eckstein Memorial Freedom Flight, bringing Jews from Ukraine and countries of distress home to Israel.

Won’t you join The Fellowship in supporting Israel and her people, and in helping fulfill prophecy?

The reality you will never know
Pastor David Scharf

Have you ever heard someone who is going through a tough time say, “What do people do who don’t have Jesus in their lives?” By God’s grace, I’ve never experienced that reality.

Today you will face difficulties and struggles and temptations and sins—most of it no one will know about. But there is One who does. He knows you. He knows your name. He knows your needs. He knows your failures. And because he knows you, with all that you face, he will help you. He knows you . . . and you know him.

Today you will hear a lot of voices, many of which intend you harm. But Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me” (John 10:27). See, that’s something admirable about sheep. Go to a watering hole in the desert of Palestine. You’ll find multiple shepherds and their flocks all mingled together. You’d think that it would be tough to separate them all out. But it’s not. All it takes is for the shepherd to call out, and instantly the sheep follow his voice. Sheep won’t budge for a stranger’s voice. In the midst of all the voices you hear today, pick out the soothing voice of your Shepherd and follow him. He never leads you wrong.

Aren’t you glad that you’ll never have to know the reality of what it’s like not to have Jesus? Me too!

Learning to Tune In

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. (Psalm 37:23 nkjv)

After more than 40 years of walking with the Lord, I’ve found that finding God’s will often is something that unfolds as I take steps of faith. It’s not as though I wake up every morning and God audibly says to me, “Okay, Greg, here’s the plan for today. Here’s the blueprint. Check it out.”

Instead, He just leads me a step at a time. And then His will becomes clear as I start walking in it. The Bible says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way” (Psalm 37:23 nkjv). So we read the Word of God, we pray for direction, and we start taking steps.

Abraham was uniquely called the friend of God. We read in Genesis that God said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?” (Genesis 18:17–18 nkjv).

And Jesus said, “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15 nkjv).

God, as your friend, wants to reveal His will to you. Not only that, but God, as your friend, wants to reveal His secrets to you as well. The Bible says, “The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Psalm 25:14 nkjv).

The will of God is not an option for the true Christian. That is because God’s will is not an itinerary; it’s an attitude.

There are things God wants to unfold and unveil in our lives, but we need to learn to tune in.

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

3263

“Holy” is one of those words we generally associate with the “stained glass ghetto” — a word only “church folks” use. That may be true, but it’s still a great concept. Every kid knows that you don’t eat hot dogs and potato chips on china. Mom’s china is reserved for “special company” or “special occasions.” Hot dogs are for paper plates and every day, china is for special events. When God is calling us to be holy, he’s calling us to be china — something special just for him, and as Peter emphasizes, just like him.

My Prayer…

Holy Lord, God Almighty, I come before you knowing how great the distance is between your holiness and my commonness. I thank you for making me holy through the sacrifice of Jesus and by sending your Holy Spirit to live inside of me. Please receive my life today as a holy offering to you. I pray in the name of Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Illustration of 1 Peter 1:15-16 — Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

Leaves of Life – February 11

FEBRUARY ELEVENTH

  • Mary, Queen of England, born 1516.
  • Daniel Boone born 1735.
  • Lydia M. Child born 1802.
  • Washington Gladden born 1836.
  • Thomas A. Edison born 1847.
Few, in the days of early youth,
Trusted like me in love and truth.
I’ve learned sad lessons from the years;
But slowly and with many tears;
For God made me to kindly view
The world that I was passing through.
And all who tempt a trusting heart
From faith and hope to drift apart,
May they themselves be spared the pain
Of losing power to trust again!
God help us all to kindly view
The world that we are passing through!
—Lydia M. Child.

For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing; and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
—Isaiah 55. 12.

Lord God, I pray that I may not rest my hope in self alone, but know that the greatest joy is in the hope of the world. Help me to have faith in mankind; and with a loyal heart and a brave spirit be as kind to the world as I can. Amen.
