How Does God Bring Healing and Growth?

In a broken and sin-infected world, one of the wonderful promises of God is that He is our healer. The Bible tells us this is in God’s very nature.

In fact, one of the names God gives to Himself is Jehovah-Rapha, which means, “I am the Lord who heals you.” God is, by His very nature, a healer—a God of health and wholeness.

The question is, “How does He heal?” If you look to Scripture, you’ll find a clear answer in Psalm 107:20…

He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

As you look at this verse, what’s interesting is that the word healed here is the word Rapha, the same word God uses to describe Himself as healer. And this verse gives us an important clue as to how God heals us.

That clue is this: “He sent His word and healed them.

I believe this is God’s main method for bringing healing to His people. In fact, Proverbs 4:20–22 tells us,

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.

God’s Word is medicine to our flesh. It is God’s method of bringing healing to His people.

And here’s the key: When God sends His Word to us, He always sends it in seed form. We find this truth in Mark 4, where Jesus told the parable of the sower…

Jesus talks about a sower who has a bag of seed, and he’s scattering that seed on the ground. Some of the seed fails to grow as it’s devoured by the birds, falls on shallow earth, or falls among thorns. But some seed falls on good ground and produces a crop that’s increased thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.

In every case, what is the seed that the sower is sowing? Mark 4:14 tells us, “The sower sows the word.

When God’s Word comes, it comes as a seed. How you respond to it determines the kind of harvest you’re going to get in your life.

5 Dizzying Tall Skyscraper Viewing Platforms

If your travels take you to a metropolitan city, there’s a good chance that one or two skyscrapers are going to be on your attractions list. There’s something awe-inspiring about seeing a city from high up in the air. But there are some skyscrapers that can be a little intimidating if you have a fear of heights or long elevator rides. With that in mind, add these five skyscraper viewing platforms to your itinerary if you’re ready to conquer this common fear.

When most people think of Seoul, they probably imagine K-Pop groups like BTS, tasty kimchi, and the posh Gangnam district (thanks PSY!). But what you might not know is that Seoul is also home to the tallest glass-bottomed observation deck and swimming pool. Lotte is a firm that’s well-known across South Korea and other countries. Its skyscraper Lotte World Tower is the fifth-tallest skyscraper in the world and features 123 stories. But stop off at the 118th floor and literally float above the city.

If the idea of walking on glass freaks you out, we get it, but at least step out before you race back to the safety of solid flooring. Zip to the observation deck via the elevator in less than a minute. And if you find that glass-bottomed floors are too much for you, it’s okay. The tower complex also houses a movie theater, amusement park, and plenty of shops closer to the ground.

Remember when you were a kid and you played on the slide during recess? Well, you can still do that as an adult, but with a glass-bottomed view of Los Angeles below. No seriously, we’re not kidding! There’s a glass slide in the US Bank Tower in the heart of LA. The slide is roughly 1,000 feet above the city and has a length of 45 feet. Don’t worry: Even though it’s made entirely of glass, it’s fully enclosed so there’s no risk of flying off into the atmosphere. After you get your thrills, head over to the Skyspace Bar with your travel party and toast to the fact that you survived this adventure.

Burj Khalifa

Of course, no list of tall things would be complete without the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. It’s so tall that you can catch a sunset twice by simply hopping the elevator and going up to a higher floor. While the Burj Khalifa doesn’t have a death-defying observation deck, the fact that it sits 1,821 feet high on the 148th floor means it deserves to be on this list. The building offers three observation decks, on levels 124, 125, and 148. Levels 124 and 125 are accessible with one ticket purchase, while level 148 is available with an enhanced ticket that gives you access to all three levels. Enjoy unparalleled views of Dubai, tasty drinks and refreshments from the Sky Lounge, and an immersive virtual reality experience that lets you fly over the famed city.

Petronas Towers

Once upon a time, the Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world. Between 1999 and 2004, they were the tallest until Tapei 101 snagged that title (which, as we mentioned, was later taken by the Burj Khalifa). Today they are ranked as the 17th tallest buildings but are still the tallest twin towers in the world. The towers are a central figure within Malaysia’s business world, and they’re featured prominently in several movies, video games, and animated shows. Cool pop culture aside, the Petronas Towers are best known for the SkyBridge, the starting point of your tour and a two-story bridge that connects the two towers. Continue on to the 86th floor where the observation deck and gift shop are located. There is an official tour that takes roughly an hour to complete. So, this is a great pit stop during a day of sightseeing through Kuala Lumpur.

Shanghai World Financial Center

Finally, we round out this list of dizzying skyscraper observation decks with the Shanghai World Financial Center building. Currently, it is the world’s second tallest skyscraper. Like many modern buildings, its viewing areas aren’t limited to one floor. This building offers three viewing spaces between levels 94, 97, and 100. Take in full panoramic views on the 94th and 97th floors. But for the truly brave, head to the 100th floor for a glass-bottomed bird’s-eye view of the bustling city below thanks to the Skywalk. No matter which floor you choose, it’s best to pick a clear day since the views can be obscured on cloudy days.

If we haven’t scared you off from visiting some of the world’s tallest and most impressive buildings, this list should serve as a great starting point for your adventures. Of course, these aren’t your only options as pretty much every major city in the world has its share of awe-inspiring skyscrapers and observation decks that range from impressive to chic and “Instagram-worthy.” Have you visited any of the places on our list? Or are there any that you think should have made the cut?

Quantity and Quality

NIGHT LIKE FOR PARENTS

Every prudent man acts out of knowledge, but a fool exposes his folly. Proverbs 13:16

The old debate about which is best for your children, “quantity time” or “quality time,” shouldn’t be a debate at all. Your children need both. After all, when you look forward all week to an evening at your town’s finest and most expensive restaurant, you won’t be satisfied with a huge serving of steak that tastes awful. Nor will you settle for a tiny bite of the best steak ever. No, at those prices, you deserve quantity and quality! And that’s just what your kids deserve from you.

Of course, some of us deceive ourselves. We think we’re giving our children the undivided attention they need. But you’re missing the target if you have a football game on television while you play Monopoly with the kids, or read the paper while “helping” them with homework, or drive them to the office to color while you work, or take them to one movie at the multiplex while you watch another. Sure, your kids may enjoy some of these activities, but they also know the difference between an involved parent and one who’s merely pretending. They deserve “sincere” love (Romans 12:9).

Like the fool in the book of Proverbs, we’ll eventually expose our folly if we try to fake significant interest in the lives of our kids. Let’s be “prudent” parents and give them our best effort.

Before you say good night…

Do you ever try to substitute a few “quality” minutes for significant time with your kids?

Do you give the kids your full attention when you’re with them?

Lord, thank You that even as You direct the stars and planets, You still hear our feeble cries and give us Your attention. Help us, Lord, to be like You. Help us to listen to our children, to make time for them, and to let them know in a thousand ways how much they are loved. Amen.

The Shaping of Girls

By Dr. James Dobson

The Shaping of Girls

Like their brothers, many girls are being victimized by cultural influences that are increasingly more violent, hypersexualized, and spiritually impoverished. And this is the key: our society is at war with good parents who are trying desperately to protect their kids from the harmful forces swirling around them.

Let me ask some rhetorical questions to those of you who are raising girls. Do you hope your daughters will be sexually promiscuous even from their early teen years? “Certainly not!” I can almost hear most of you saying. But indulge me for the purposes of illustration. Do you prefer that your girls be brash, loud, and aggressive in their relationships with males? Do you hope they will be easy marks for boys seeking sexual conquest? Is it your desire that they imitate rogue masculine behavior, such as being quick-tempered, immodest, insensitive, and disrespectful of others? Do you want them to be foulmouthed, crude, rude, profane, and discourteous?

Is it your desire that they dress provocatively in order to attract the attention of guys, revealing more than they conceal? When they become teenagers, do you want them to look like prostitutes, pumping up their lips with collagen and their breasts with silicone? Would you like them to dangle rings from their body parts and dye their hair green, orange, purple, and pink? Do you want them to be so ashamed of their bodies that they feel compelled to diet at nine years of age and are afraid to eat by thirteen? Are you comfortable with professors who will encourage your nearly grown daughters to experiment with lesbian relationships and tell them that bisexuality is an even greater trip? Do you hope that your girls will learn that marriage is an outdated institution that should be redefined or discarded? Do you want them to disdain the cherished spiritual beliefs you have been teaching them since they were babies?

If these are your aspirations for your vulnerable little girls, and I’m sure they are not, then you need do nothing to achieve them. The popular culture will do the job for you. It is designed to turn this generation of kids into politically correct little MTV clones. The influence of the entertainment industry, Madison Avenue, the internet, hip-hop musicians, some public schools, liberal universities, and other institutions are shaping and warping youngsters and infusing them with harmful ideas that will rob them of the innocence of childhood.

As a result, some of our girls will lose their prospects of having a productive and happy life. The stability of their future families is hanging in the balance. This is what lies in the paths of children whose parents are overworked, distracted, exhausted, and uninvolved. Without their care and concern, the culture will take them to hell. I have witnessed it a thousand times. Even with proper parental supervision, many of our kids are on the bubble.

I am most concerned about the children among us who are chronically lonely. Their parents are gone much of the time, leaving them to fend for themselves. Human beings desperately need each other, and those who are isolated do not thrive. Not only do lonely children tend to get into trouble, they also become sitting ducks for abusers who understand their emptiness and use it for their own purposes.

One thing is certain: your children are being targeted by businesses that are willing to exploit them for quick profits. Is there any doubt that the pornography industry wants to sell salacious and perverse images to curious adolescents, regardless of where that exposure leads? The dirty old men (and women) who sell this stuff don’t wait for “customers” to come knocking on the door. They go out looking for them. According to former attorney general John Ashcroft, nine out of ten teens have been exposed to pornographic images. Those who stumble across this wretched stuff on the internet or in other media are highly susceptible to what they see. Boys as young as thirteen are easily trapped in addictive and progressive behavior that will plague them for a lifetime. Girls are directly affected because their boyfriends expect them to imitate what is depicted in obscene products.

A myriad of other businesses are also seeking to manipulate girls. Mattel, Inc., for example, released a sexy little doll called “My Scene My Bling Bling Chelsea Doll.” Critics called it “Hooker Barbie.”

Not only are toys becoming sexier, they are also undergoing something called “age compression.” It used to be that girls from six to ten were the prime market for Barbie and other dress-up dolls. Nowadays, Barbie is targeted at three- to five-year-olds. As Stacy Weiner wrote, it’s “good-bye to girlhood.” Writer Bruce Kluger commented, “You’ve come a long way, Raggedy Ann.”

Child development experts warn that parents could be baiting pedophiles by dressing their daughters as raunchy women. The American Psychological Association (APA) warns that sexualizing children leads to three of the most common mental health problems among girls and women: eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression. Does the APA really have to convince moms and dads that making their six-year-olds into sexpots is just plain stupid?

The unanswered question at this point is, “Where are the parents?” Five-year-old girls certainly can’t buy thongs or jewel-encrusted underwear or dolls that look like little prostitutes. Their parents have to be forking over the cash. Sales receipts from a few years back indicated that parents spent $1.6 million on thong underwear for their seven- to twelve-year-old daughters. I fear that many adults who ought to know better have abdicated their responsibility to guide their precious children.

It should not surprise us that many teen girls who have been raised in the sexual idiocy of the twenty-first century have made adolescent promiscuity a way of life. And most of them are lost—hopelessly lost. Michelle Malkin, one of my favorite columnists and television commentators, is urging us to recognize what is happening to our children. She wrote:

As a mother of a 4 year old girl and an 8 month old boy, I am increasingly dismayed by the liberal assault on decency, the normalization of promiscuity, and the mainstream media’s role as shameless collaborators. . . . You would think that it’s normal to dress up in [Little Miss Hooters] outfits at 5 years old, to wear sex bracelets and discuss oral sex at 10, to flash your breasts for the cameras at 15, to get paid for anal sex at 20, to keep Excel spreadsheets of sexual conquests, and to use abortion as birth control until menopause. When conservative women say, “Have some self-respect,” liberals in the media call us self-righteous. When conservative women say promiscuity is degrading and self-destructive, liberals in the media call us prudes. When liberal women raise their voices, they are praised as “passionate.” When conservative women raise their voices, we are condemned as “shrill.”

Malkin concluded with this advice for parents:

Be “prudes.” Be “rude.” Be “shrill.” And never, ever feel ashamed for asking out loud, “Have you no shame?”

Obviously, the culture has our children in its crosshairs, and either we can go with the flow or we can fight back with all our resources. Heaven help our kids if we remain passive and disconnected.
