A Psalm for the Season of Restlessness [Part 1]
Are you ready for some good news?
You can run, but you can’t hide. And the fact that you can’t hide from God is the best news imaginable.
Today’s Text: “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:7–10, ESV)
Recently, I stumbled upon some real life examples of little kids’ letters to their parents explaining why the child was running away from home. Check out a few examples that are bound to make you chuckle.
Here’s Emily’s note: “Mom, I’m going to run away tomorrow at 9:30 when you and Dad are sleeping. Be sure to say goodbye forever. Emily. p.s. I will be packing tonight”
Check out this determined child (still struggling with his spelling):“By the time you read this I might be leaving. If you want to see me agen I will be at the first micdonlds that you see wn you go rite from our house. I love you.”
And note the definite ambivalence here: “Dear Mom and Dad, I got really mad so I ran away. Me. p.s. I might come back.”\
Ha! I suppose we’re all full of ambivalence. We really want our independence, but we also want to be secure.\
Psalm 139 expresses the delight and ambivalence of David’s heart. Realizing that he can’t run from God is, in the end, the joy of his heart.
The reason it is such good news that we can’t run away or hide from God is that our feelings and thoughts are much too fickle. If the Christian life depended on my capacity to stay near God, I would be most certainly worried every day. But if my relationship with God is not so flimsy as to rise and fall upon my commitment to be near Him, I can rest in the security of His love.
To say that you can’t hide from God is to say that God refuses to quit pursuing you. Let that sink in. The Creator of the cosmos pursues you. It means that He loves you. It means that He wants you. It means you are of infinite worth. It means that He treasures you too much to let you escape.\
You can run, but you can’t hide. And that’s the Gospel!
