Persistent in Prayer

Read Luke 18:1,7

“Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not lose heart…now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?”

Reflect

Have you ever prayed and felt like God wasn’t listening? Did you keep praying, or did you give up?

In Luke, chapter 18, Jesus tells a parable of a widow who asks a corrupt judge to grant her justice against her enemy. It says that the judge “neither feared God nor respected man.” He refused her request. Multiple times. But she just kept on asking him. Finally, he decides to do as she asked. Not because he wanted to do the right thing. No, he just wanted her to stop badgering him about it!

My children understand this. Just keep begging mom until she gets tired of listening to us whine, and she’ll eventually give in. While I try not to reward whining, I will be the first to admit that sometimes, they wear me down!

Jesus’s point was that even an unrighteous judge (or a mom in a weak moment) will give in eventually after persistence. But God isn’t an unrighteous judge. He’s compassionate, full of loving-kindness, and merciful. He is our Heavenly Father, and we are His “elect.” His chosen ones. His children. He doesn’t just “give in” because He’s tired of listening to us whine. He truly cares for us and listens to us as we cry out to Him.

If you read Luke 18 to the end, you’ll find another example of persistence paying off. Verses 35-42 tell the story of Jesus healing a blind man on the roadside. Luke tells us that when the blind man heard that Jesus was walking by, he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” He was rebuked by those around him and told him to be quiet, but he didn’t let that stop him. He knew Jesus was the only one who could help him, so he just kept calling out to Him. Jesus stopped and granted his request. He restored his sight. Jesus told the man, “Your faith has made you well.”

Persistence in prayer shows your faith. It shows that you know who Jesus is and that you trust Him. You know that He’s listening and that He has the power to grant your request. So don’t lose heart. Keep crying out to Him day and night. He’s listening.

Pray

Father, I don’t know why you don’t immediately answer my prayers. But I do know that you love me and hear me. I know you are able to grant my request. So I will keep on asking in faith and trust you with the outcome. Amen.
