The Kindness of God – Forward with Back to the Bible – September 28

The Kindness of God

Read Romans 2:1-4

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of His kindness, forbearance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

Reflect

What do you think is more effective when evangelizing? Judging nonbelievers for their unrighteousness or treating them with kindness?

What drew you to Christ? Was it the book of Leviticus or Deuteronomy? Was it because Christians kept reminding you of endless laws and requirements? Did someone angrily point out to you all the ways that you were living an ungodly life? Did enough self-righteous believers look down their noses at you for you to finally decide to get right with God?

Probably not. You probably did not come to Jesus because someone was harsh and self-righteous towards you. Chances are you came to Christ because someone invested in you and shared the Gospel with you. Someone told you the truth but with kindness.

The law is important and exposes our sins. It is necessary to call sin what it is and admit that we all need a Savior. But the conviction wasn’t enough. What finally won you over was likely the good news of God’s great love and mercy. Perhaps it was the fact that He died for your sins and has been incredibly patient with you. And chances are you experienced God’s kindness and love through someone else.

Friends, we can’t expect to lead many people to our Savior by simply calling out all of their sins. We need to first remember our own sinfulness. We must remember who we were apart from Christ. We remember the grace that God offers us as well as them. Then we display that grace and share the good news.

Today display the grace of God to those who are far from God. Allow the Gospel to be heard boldly with kindness. Then let the Spirit do the rest.

Pray

God, You are patient and kind. Full of love and mercy. Help me to treat those around me with Your kindness rather than judgment. Amen.
