We count those who suffer blessed.
James ended his dissertation on trials by saying, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation [trials]” (1:12). People who successfully endure trials and overcome temptation are truly happy. Santiago does not say that happiness is freedom from trials, but victory over them. There is a big difference. It is not the superficial joy of the spectator who was never in the conflict; it is the joy of the participant who fought and won. Is your experience like the first or the second?
