God’s in Control – Forward with Back to the Bible – October 12

God’s in Control

Read Daniel 2:20-21

Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His, He changes times and seasons; He deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

Reflect

How are you feeling about the upcoming election? How does reflecting on God’s sovereignty affect your emotions?

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are but here in Nebraska, we are experiencing cooler weather. The leaves are changing colors and the days are getting shorter. Summer is gone and fall is here. God keeps the world turning in a familiar pattern. No matter how chaotic things seem, God still brings fall after summer and before winter. We can count on it. It’s a reminder that God is still on His throne.

In this passage, Daniel reminds us that it is also God who “deposes kings and raises up others”. He is in charge of those in charge. This should bring us a lot of comfort. With an election coming up, many Christians find themselves anxious. The leadership of this country affects our daily lives. It is important for us to pray and to vote as we feel lead. But remember, it is not the American people who determine who the next president is. God is the one who ultimately determines that.

Notice that Daniel is praising God for his wisdom and power. He is praising Him for changing the times and seasons. And He is praising Him for deposing leaders and raising up new ones. If anyone understood what bad leadership can do for a nation, it was Daniel.

As a young man, he watched as his nation was carried off into captivity because of corrupt leadership while he was drafted into the service of the Babylonian king. He watched the first king that he served, Nebuchadnezzar, pridefully disobey God and go temporarily insane. Another king that Daniel served was so corrupt, Babylon was overthrown and taken over by the Medes and Persians. One king threw Daniel into a den of lions for praying to God.

Throughout Daniel’s life, kings would rise and kings would fall. Nations would conquer and be conquered. Through it all, Daniel praised God.

Friends, we don’t know how the election will turn out in a few weeks. We don’t know what the future holds for our country. But we can be like Daniel who was unwavering in his faith in God. He served his country, respected the leaders in authority over him, and yet, obeyed God rather than man when the two were in conflict. And regardless of who was on the earthly throne of his country, he praised his God who was, is and always will be on the heavenly throne.

Pray

God, You are sovereign. I trust Your wisdom in determining the next leader of our country. Please give me Your wisdom and discernment as I cast my vote. Amen.
