Encounter with Jesus – October 14

Give the Lord Jesus the first place

PHILIPPIANS 2.9-11

When Jesus Christ takes first place in our lives, we experience many blessings, including:

A calm spirit. When we turn our attention to the Lord and meditate on His Word, He will “shepherd [us] by the still waters,” where we find rest for our souls (Ps 23.2). The Holy Ghost helps us to shut out distractions, to give us the assurance of the love and support of our heavenly Father. With a calm mind and heart, we can discern what God is saying to us.

A stronger faith. Studying the Bible broadens our view of God, and gives us insight and direction. Reading how the Lord has helped others gives us the confidence that He is by our side, allowing us to face the demands of life. Our faith grows as we obey his direction and observe how he acts on our behalf.

A purified heart. Like a mirror, the Bible reflects to us who we really are, and reveals what we need to change. If we confess our sin, God promises to cleanse us from all unrighteousness ( 1 Jn 1 .9).

A prepared mind. We don’t know what will happen in the future, but God does. He wants to prepare us for both happy times and difficult times. Through the Holy Spirit, we will be equipped for whatever life throws at us (2 P 1.3).

Paul’s life demonstrates what it means to give the Lord Jesus first place (Gal 2.20), he knew joy in the midst of trials, and received strength to face crisis and difficulties. We will also have these blessings if we make relationship with the Lord Jesus our priority.
