“Because what is his thought in his heart, such is he. Eat and drink, he will tell you; but his heart is not with you ” (Proverbs 23: 7).
A teacher asked a little boy to finish this proverb: “Cleanliness is close to…” And he replied: “Cleanliness is close to impossibility”. Well, buddy, the little boy wasn’t that far from the truth, was he? It’s amazing what people do in order to try to purify themselves: they fast, they pray, they kneel, they walk, they self-flagellate, they winter, they isolate themselves. Yet sadly they discover that human endeavor is not the way to purity because they continue with a worldly mind. Before claiming to have a life of purity, we must have a life of clean thought. God works from the inside out. He knows that you cannot purify contaminated water just by painting the outside of the well.
Do you struggle with carnal thoughts? So ask yourself the following: 1) Do these thoughts help me to love God and people more ?; 2) Do I really trust God to solve this situation ?; 3) Have I cried out to God to help me take these thoughts captive and bring them to the obedience of Christ?
