God Knows … When I Wonder If Someone Loves Me, Part 2 – Adventures in Sacred History – The Week of October 12

God Knows … When I Wonder If Someone Loves Me – Part 2
After questioning Jesus, Pilate wants to let Jesus go because he is innocent. But that’s not what the crowd wants. Angry voices yell, “Get the people in an uproar, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee all the way here.” This gives Pilate an idea. Herod is the governor of Galilee. He can take care of this situation. Herod has heard a lot about Jesus. Interested, he asks Jesus many questions. But he loses his patience when Jesus does not agree to perform miracles when asked. Herod sends Jesus back to Pilate.

It is customary to set a prisoner free during Easter. Pilate chooses the worst criminal – Barabbas – a thief, political rebel and murderer. “Who do you want me to set free, Barabbas or Jesus?” Pilate asks. “Barabbas!” shouts the crowd. Thinking that they have not understood their question, Pilate says to them, “Do you want me to set the King of the Jews free?” “Barabbas! Barabbas!” they answer. “What then should I do with Jesus?” The verdict is heard. “Crucify him!”

The crowd watches as the soldiers beat Jesus. They put a crown of thorns on his head. The heavy cross made for Barabbas is placed on Jesus’ wounded shoulders. He staggers and falls. A stranger, Simon Cirineo hardly mentions a word of compassion when they put the cross of Jesus on his shoulders. When the procession reaches the top of Calvary, one blow after another, the hands and feet of Jesus are nailed to the cross. The soldiers carelessly lift the cross and put it in its place. Jesus neither resists nor complains. Instead, pray for their enemies, “Father, forgive them because they don’t know what they’re doing.”

Two thieves are crucified with Jesus. “If you are the Christ, save us all three,” says one of them. The other thief, sure that Jesus is the Savior, says “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus promises that He will.

The End
At noon, everything goes dark. It flashes. With his last breath, Jesus cries out, “It is finished! Father, into your hands I commend my soul.” Jesus dies and the earth trembles. A soldier exclaims, “Truly, this man was the Son of God!”

Why? Why did Jesus come to this world knowing what was going to happen to him? Why did he hang on a cross without complaining? His love for you and me kept him there. If YOU were the ONLY one in this world who had disobeyed His law of love, He would still have come to rescue you.

Someone loves you. Never forget it.
