Pay Caesar what Belongs to Caesar
For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
Paul lived in a time when the government was trying to take control of Christians. Remember many Christians would die at the hands of Caesar Nero. Even today, there might come a time when Christians will have to stand. They will have to make a decision either to be for Rome or for Christ. God has created us with a conscious, and given us the ability to choose between right and wrong. Despite persecution, Christian’s are to speak and do what is right and moral.
Despite times of persecution, Paul taught Christians they should pay taxes. Even today, the government requires that we pay taxes. We are paying for Washington, and all branches of government. This is one thing people fail to do in the Church, people do not pay their taxes. Christians cannot do that anymore. Believers need to pay taxes. In fact, Christians need to pay God tithes (Malachi 3:10), and pay taxes. Do not argue with God. Understand there are consequences when you neglect to do both. The government will issue penalties if you refuse to pay your taxes. It is biblical to pay taxes, and to give tithes to God! People fear punishment from the government, but who is greater God or government?
Consider this, when Godly people are ruling in government then we can be blessed with a godly society. If we would chose godly people and appoint them to positions in government, then we will live according to the Word of God. Yet if there is ungodly, corrupt authority selected in government, then I believe America is being oppressed and judged.
If new laws are passed and they are in conflict with God’s Word, then we cannot obey them. We have to obey the Law of God. Always refer back to the Bible and what it teaches. Understand, it is God who rules the world!
“…render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
