Encounter with Jesus – October 20

The foundation of an unshakable faith

HEBREWS 13: 1-8

When the storms of life arise, what is your response? Some people lose their way easily. Others have their thinking dissociated when doubt and fear invade their minds. They begin to wonder if the Lord really cares about them. But the Bible unequivocally tells us that it does care.

Today’s passage provides the foundation for our assurance in difficult times. In the V. 8, we are assured that the Lord Jesus never changes. His being, his works and his words never change. To understand the importance of this consistency, imagine a friend who seemed loyal to you, but suddenly whispers about you or betrays you in some other way. That uncertain loyalty and breach of trust cause painful wounds.

All people at some point will let us down in one way or another. The Lord is the only one who loves us perfectly and constantly. So take heart: God never changes. No matter what we are facing today, our heavenly Father is still the One whose hand has showered blessings on us in happy times. And it is the One who strengthens us, guides and sustains us in difficult days. Each passage in the Bible reveals another facet of his flawless character, and we can know that we are loved with the same fidelity that Christ displayed by dying for us on Calvary.

Think about the ups and downs of life. When situations make you happy, how do you imagine God? When difficulties arise, does your perspective change? Fortunately, in the ebb and flow of circumstances, we can hold onto the Lord Jesus as our anchor.
