Were There Many Floods?
2 Peter 3: 5-6
“These voluntarily ignore that in ancient times the heavens were made by the word of God, and also the earth, which comes from water and subsists by water, therefore the world of that time perished drowned in water … “
The ideas of Deep Geology are actually older than Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. In many ways, it was deep-time ideas that gave rise to Darwinism, and not the other way around.
Before the 1800s, most scientists would have assumed that the fossil record was evidence of the global Flood. However, even in the 1700s, there were those, like James Hutton in Edinburgh, Scotland, who had begun to suggest long ages without a Flood.
There were also always those scientists who wanted to react against such ideas, but in doing so some of these scientists made their own compromises about the biblical account. Georges Cuvier, who lived from 1768 to 1832, was one of them. He couldn’t accept that there hadn’t been a Flood, but he accepted Hutton’s views on the extreme age of fossils, thus starting to suggest that there had in fact been multiple catastrophes in the past.
In his book, The Theory of the Earth (1813), he suggested that the rock layers were evidence of extinction events. He suggested that each extinction event was caused by some kind of catastrophe – probably a flood. Today your ideas may seem like the worst of all possible ideas on the subject, so how did this hybrid opinion develop? Remember that at that time Radiometric Dating did not exist, so your only justification for accepting the assumed ages of these fossils was the opinion of other scientists. These are the kinds of compromises we make when we don’t make The Inerrancy of the Scriptures our starting point.
Prayer: Thank you Lord, that Your Word is always true and is the basis of all our opinions on each subject. Amen.
