The joy of Paul
My beloved and desired brothers, my joy and crown.
Philippians 4: 1
The joy of the apostle Paul came from other believers. Today’s verse says that the Philippian believers were his “joy and crown.” To the Thessalonian believers I likewise said “What is our hope, or joy, or crown of my boasting? Aren’t you, before our Lord Jesus Christ, at his coming? You are our glory and joy” (1 Thess. 2: 19-20).
Paul rejoiced in the salvation and spiritual growth of the church, which is represented by the word crown . The term refers to a laurel wreath, something an athlete received in biblical times for winning a tournament (1 Cor. 9:25). But a sportsman was not the only one who received such a laurel wreath. If someone was entertained by their companions, they would also receive one as a guest of honor at the great banquet. So the crown symbolized success or a profitable life. The Philippian believers were Paul’s reward; proof of the success of your efforts. When you serve with your gifts, God wants you to feel the joy that Paul felt.
