Fully God, Fully Man
Read Galatians 4:4-7
But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are His sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.
Why was it necessary for Jesus to be both God’s Son and born of a woman?
The story is a familiar one to most of us. We hear it at Christmas every year. “In the fullness of time” or “when the time was right”, God sent His Son Jesus to be born of a virgin, Mary. But why did Jesus have to be God in order to redeem us? And why did Jesus have to be born of a woman?
In order for us to understand the answer, we need to understand why we need to be redeemed in the first place. We need redemption because we all fall short of God’s perfect standard. Because of Adam’s sin, we all sin. And this sin separates us from God. God’s standard is perfection and there will never be a perfect man. Plus, a mere man would be crushed under the weight of the sins of the world.
No man would ever have been able to save mankind. Salvation is from God alone, thus, Jesus had to be fully God in order to save us.
Jesus had to be born of a woman because He also had to be fully human. In order to redeem humans who were condemned by the law, he had to be the perfect human who could perfectly keep the law. He was the perfect sacrifice we needed for our sins. As fully God and fully man, He could be the perfect substitute sacrifice we needed to be redeemed once and for all.
So what does that mean for us now? For believers in Jesus Christ, we are no longer slaves to the law but children of God. We are spiritual sons and daughters. Friend, if you have not yet accepted Jesus’s substitutionary death on your behalf, I encourage you to do that today. We are all sinners condemned by the law but in Christ, we are free from sin and heirs of the kingdom. Don’t stay in the bondage and slavery of your sin. Step into the freedom of God’s family.
Father, thank You for sending Your Son to be born of a woman to be the perfect sacrifice on my behalf. I know I needed a Savior. Thank You for the freedom found in being in Your family. Amen.
