How to hold on to God’s promises
The Bible is full of God’s generous intention to give us a gift. In any circumstance, but especially in difficult times, his promises are an anchor for our souls. They give us the hope that enables us to be brave and fearless when we face the storms of life.
But many people don’t trust God’s promises, for two reasons. First, because they are not aware of them. Second, because some do not believe they are true. Many believers can quote Scripture, but when faced with an intimidating trial — such as failing health or the loss of a job — their confidence wavers and doubt overcomes them.
If we don’t know everything the Bible guarantees us, we can read and study, but we can’t force ourselves to believe. Faith is a gift from God. Luke 24 records twice that people came face to face with the Lord Jesus, but did not recognize him. He had to open their spiritual eyes before they could actually see him. The same can be said of our faith: it is not possible without the Holy Spirit.
The Lord Jesus gives believers countless promises in the Bible – of protection, hope, eternal security, counsel, and direction, to name just a few. Do you trust Him?
As you read the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to see the promises that apply to your life. Consider them, memorize them, and meditate on them. Heavenly Father wants you to own these truths. So when the tests come, you will have a sure foundation to lean on.
