The protection of peace
The peace of God… will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4: 7
Today’s verse refers to the peace of God that protects our hearts and our thoughts. “Guardará” is a military term that means “keep watching.” The Philippian believers lived in a fortified city where Roman soldiers were to protect the interests of the empire in that part of the world. Likewise, the peace of God protects us from anxiety, doubt, fear, and anguish.
The believer who does not live in confidence in the sovereignty of God will lack his peace and will be left in the chaos of a troubled heart. But our sure trust in the Lord will allow us to thank Him in the midst of trials that we have the peace of God that protects our hearts and minds.
When Paul refers to our hearts and thoughts, he makes no distinction between them. It is a broad statement that describes the entire inner being of the person. Thanks to our union with Christ, he protects our whole being with his peace. And that is what helps us to be spiritually stable.
