Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. –Matthew 18:21-22
In every relationship – whether it is friendship, marriage, family, or business partnerships – conflict is a given. There will be times in life that we won’t see eye-to-eye with people in our lives. There will be times that others do something against us. When that happens, as Christ followers, we have a responsibility. The Bible teaches us to be quick to forgive those who wrong us.
It’s not an easy thing to do. The work of forgiveness is some of the hardest work we will do in our lives. Often, we don’t feel like forgiving someone who has wronged us. But if we wait for the feelings before we forgive, we’ll never forgive. What we must do is make the decision to forgive, and trust that the feelings will follow. Don’t hold on to unforgiveness. Instead, be quick to forgive, and experience the freeing feelings that God has in store for you in that situation.
Thank God for doing the hardest forgiveness work there is by sending His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for your sins and to rise again. Pray for the courage and the discipline to forgive others who have wronged you, even when you don’t feel like it.
Write down the name of someone who has wronged you. Then, say a prayer for that person. Even if you don’t feel like it, pray for God to bless them, and admit to Him that you need His help in forgiving them.
