When the Angels Sang – Adventures in Sacred History – The Week of January 4

When the Angels sang

“Glory in the highest to God and on earth peace and goodwill toward men.” – Luke 2:14

On a clear night two thousand years ago, shepherds were tending their sheep on a hill near the town of Bethlehem in Palestine. As they gazed at the stars, a bright light suddenly surrounded them. The light became as clear as day. The shepherds were very afraid and covered their eyes with their hands.

Then they heard a kind voice speaking to them: “Do not be afraid, for behold, I am giving you news of great joy that will be for all the people.” When the eyes were uncovered, they saw a radiant angel standing before them. The light coming from the angel had illuminated the entire field. The angel continued: “That a Savior who is Christ the Lord has been born to you today in the city of David.” Suddenly, all heaven was filled with bright angels singing: “Glory in the highest to God and on earth peace and good will towards men!” The shepherds asked someone else to care for the sheep while they went to find the Savior, and they hurried down the road to Bethlehem.

Far away in another country, some very wise men lived. They studied many books including the Holy Scriptures, and they had discovered that on God’s clock it was time for the Savior to come to this earth. One night, while studying the stars, they were very surprised to see a new star brighter than any they had seen before. They believed that this new star was a sign that a king had been born. “Let’s follow the star to see where it takes us,” said one of the sages, “and we will find this new king.” They quickly gathered some gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh and they began to ride their camels through the desert. They traveled at night to see the star and rested during the day.

The shepherds and the wise men found the Savior Jesus and gave him honor and glory. They knew that the Savior was about to be born, primarily because they studied Him in the Holy Scriptures. In this same way you can learn by reading the Bible to learn more about God’s great love and what he has in store for his children in the near future.
