John Day 46

Day 46.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, once again, we come before You in Your throne of grace. We confessed that we are sinners. Please forgive and have mercy on us, in Jesus’ name, Amen

John 12: 1-11, Anointing of Jesus by Mary of Bethany.

VV 1-3, 1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

6 days before the Passover, Jesus and His disciples were invited to a dinner hosted by Mary, Marta and Lazarus of Bethany. Marta served. Her love language was service. Mary took an alabaster flask of spikenard, broke it, poured it on Jesus’ feet, and wiped His feet dry with her hair. Mary’s love language was worship. Spikenard, a perfume imported from India, was very expensive, and was worth 300 denarii, almost one year’s wage.

VV 4-6, 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages. “6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, objected, saying it was a waste of funds, but he was a thief who frequently stole from the coffer and had a bad motive.

VV 7-8, 7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me”.

Jesus defended Mary’s action for anointing His body for burial. When Jesus hanged on the cross on Good Friday, Mary’s perfume would be very soothing to Him. Matthew 6:12-13, ‘’When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

VV 9-11, 9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.

A large crowd of Jews came to Bethany to see Jesus and Lazarus, the living testimony. Out of envious and jealousy, the chief priests wanted to kill Lazarus to prevent him from testifying for Jesus.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for this timeless story of the anointing of Jesus by Mary of Bethany, in Jesus‘ name, Amen.
