The need for repentance
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
There can be no true confession without repentance. Many times we do not confess our sin because we are not willing to give it up. When I was a young Christian, I remember telling the Lord that I was sorry for certain sins that I had committed and then thanking Him for forgiving them. But that was all he did.
Something important happened in my spiritual life when I began to say, “Lord, thank you for forgiving me those sins. I know you don’t like them, and I don’t want to do them again.” That can be difficult to say because sometimes we want to commit certain sins again. But we reveal lack of spiritual maturity when we want to remove the punishment for sin but want to retain the pleasure. For your confession of sin to be genuine, you must turn from your sins.
