Real Friends Show Up in a Crisis – Daily Hope with Rick Warren – February 21, 2021

Real Friends Show Up in a Crisis
By Rick Warren

“A friend should treat a troubled person kindly, even if he abandons the fear of the Almighty.” Job 6:14 (GW)

Do you know the difference between a friend and an acquaintance? A real friend shows up when you’re in a crisis. When everybody else walks out, real friends walk into your life.

If you’re not sure who your real friends are, wait until your next crisis. Your acquaintances may disappear pretty quickly. But your real friends will keep showing up no matter what.

Did you know the Bible says that, even when people turn their backs on God, they still deserve to have friends? Job 6:14 says, “A friend should treat a troubled person kindly, even if he abandons the fear of the Almighty” (GW).

The first thing everybody needs in a crisis is other people. You need a support group—mature Christian brothers and sisters who will love you, care for you, comfort you, encourage you, support you, meet your needs, and counsel you. That kind of person will gently steer you back to Jesus when life’s difficulties tempt you to abandon your faith.

That’s why I never stop talking about the importance of having close Christian friends you can count on. They might be a small group from your church or a few friends you study the Bible with or pray with regularly.

Build a safety network in your life so, when the rogue winds come, you have genuine friends who will be there for you. When a crisis happens, these are the first people you’ll turn to.

Maybe you’re thinking, “But wait a minute! Don’t you need to pray first in a crisis rather than turn to other people?” Well, yes, that’s great if you can. But the truth is that in a crisis you’re often in so much stress and shock that you don’t even know what to pray. It’s at that point that you need other people praying for you.

You need your real friends to say, “We’ll pray for you. We’ll believe for you. We’ll be there for you. No matter what.”

Choose to be a true friend to your Christian brothers and sisters in crisis today. And when you go through hard times, you’ll find yourself held up by those same people.

Daily in Your Presence – Feb. 21

 Day 52

RESTORER

Restore us to yourself, O Lord,
that we may return;
renew our days as of old.
Lamentations 5:21

FROM THE FATHER’S HEART
My child, don’t you know I am not finished with you yet? Of course there is hope for you. I have plans for you that you don’t even know about yet. Your failures can be stepping-stones to success, if you will let Me restore and draw you to Myself again. I cast no one away who comes to Me in brokenness and repentance. You may never understand a love like that. Just accept it as a gift from your loving Father.

A GRATEFUL RESPONSE
Each time I step backward, You push me forward again. You take me as a master restorer would an old piece of fine furniture covered with streaks of paint and dust, retrieved from its attic burial place, and restore, polish, and renew my dull spirit. Even when I want to, You won’t let me quit. I praise You for Your restoration, Lord.

SIMPLE TRUTH

Daily Light on the Daily Path – February 21

February 21
MORNING

“I am the Lord who sanctifies you.”

“I am the Lord your God, who have separated you from the peoples. . . . You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.”

Beloved in God the Father.—“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”— Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.—Our . . . Savior Jesus Christ . . . gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.—For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers.—“And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.”—In the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood.

Lev. 20:8; Lev. 20:24, 26; Jude 1; John 17:17; 1 Thess. 5:23; Heb. 13:12; Titus 2:13, 14; Heb. 2:11; John 17:19; 1 Pet. 1:2

EVENING

Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

And what you sow is not the body that is to be.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. . . . In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Going Through the Motions, or Living the Life? – From His Heart – February 21

GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS, OR LIVING THE LIFE?

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  John 1:4

One Sunday, I had an interesting conversation with a man who was visiting our church.  He was very excited about the service.  He said to me, “This church is not like my church.  This church is alive.  This church just feels different!”  I thanked him for his comments and explained to him what he felt in the church was the manifest presence of God.  The living God is among us!  That is what makes all the difference.

Not too long ago, I ran across an insightful quote from George Whitefield, the great revivalist of the 1700’s.  God used this British evangelist to shake America in the late 1730’s and early 1740’s.  Upon returning to England after one of his trips to America, Whitefield made this sobering statement, “I am greatly persuaded that the generality of preachers talk of an unknown, unfelt Christ.  And the reason why congregations have been so dead is because dead men preach to them.”  What a terrible indictment … and so true!

I believe there are multitudes of dry, lifeless churches in America where preachers tell people of a Jesus they don’t even know and never really seek.  They often preach “feel good sermonettes” that lack the Word of God, the fear of God, and the power of God.  The result is a dull and boring religious service that is void of life, vitality, and the manifest presence of God.  The Hebrew word to describe many churches today is Ichabod – “the glory has departed.”  How sad.

CHECK YOUR LIFE

Is your life alive with the glorious presence of God?  Do you talk about an unknown, unfelt Christ … or do you really know Him, love Him, and see Him working in your life each day as you seek to do His will with all your heart?

If you are living a lifeless, joyless, powerless “Christianity,” the time is NOW to trade it in on the real thing.  The Bible says of Jesus, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4). The Lord wants you to have LIFE, not religion.  He wants to fill you with His joy, peace, and power.

Peter told the crowd in Acts 3:19, “Repent therefore and return, that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” Humble your heart before God and ask Him to forgive you and be real to you.  Tell Him you are tired of going through the motions of religion and you want LIFE!

He will answer that prayer.  He wants to refresh your soul.  Don’t wait any longer.  Start living the life Jesus died for you to have … a life overflowing with the manifest presence of God.
