Our calling in times of trouble

2 Corinthians 4: 6-18

In times of trouble, the world uses our fears to sell us a false message: Take care of yourself . The more turbulent life becomes, the easier it becomes to focus on yourself. We focus on the things we need to worry about, according to the opinion of the world, and our thoughts are reduced to me  and mine  — my opinion, what I feel, what an uncertain future holds. But God wants us to stop thinking about ourselves, and focus on what He has in mind for our lives.

So how should we respond to times of confusion? First, those of us who know Christ are called to have courage and confidence, because we know that He is enough, no matter what happens. Second, the Bible says that we are the light of the world, and that we are called to live the transformative message that is in us. Think about how the early church responded to those troubled times. They boldly went ahead — willing even to lose their lives — because they knew how great the gift God had given them was, and they wanted to share it with the world.

God does not want his children to focus on themselves in times of crisis or instability. Rather, He calls us to take the opportunity to bring His hope to those who are looking for what really matters.

God entrusted us with a mission: to make a difference in people’s lives, through his Spirit. If we lose our self-centeredness and stop living for ourselves, others will be drawn to the love, joy, and peace of God in us.
